We strive to create great opera experiences all year round - even when it is too cold to perform opera outdoors. That is why we are introducing Open Air Opera's Digital Concert 2025.
Our first digital concert will be with Danish tenor Valdemar Villadsen and the acclaimed Dutch pianist Niek van Oosterum.
Danish tenor Valdemar Villadsen graduated from the soloist class at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He has since established himself as an in-demand tenor throughout Europe, and in season 2024/25 will appear in venues such as Staatsoper Berlin – Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Styriarte Festival in Graz, and the Berliner Philharmonie.
Previous engagements have brought him to the Royal Opera House La Monnaie in Brussels, Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, Wiesbaden State Opera, Kiel Opera House, Teatro Principal de Burgos, and concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall, Berliner Philharmonie, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and festivals such as the Bergen International Festival, Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, Heinrich Schütz Musikfest, Rossini Festival, Open Air Opera Berlin, Festival de Música Antigua, Copenhagen Opera Festival, and Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden. He has performed acclaimed solo recitals in Paris, Rome, Istanbul, Berlin and Basel.
Niek van Oosterum is a Dutch pianist.
Van Oosterum took his first piano lessons at the age of seven. After winning several competitions in the Netherlands (Steinway, 1986; SJMN, 1988; Edith Stein Competition, 1989), his big breakthrough came in 1990 when he won first prize in the Eurovision Competition “Eurovision Young Musician of the Year” in Vienna. In the years that followed, he played with the Orkest van het Oosten, Het Gelders Orkest, the Residentie Orkest, the Royal Orchestra of Flanders, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires, the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker and the Berliner Symphoniker (including in the Philharmonie in Berlin).
In addition to solo recitals, Niek also regularly plays in chamber music. For example, he forms a two-piano duo with Bas Verheijden, and a violin-piano duo with Saskia Viers
